• Q: How to remove and install an exhaust manifold on 2.3L and 2.6L four cylinder engine on 2001 Honda Passport?

  A: Loosen the negative terminal of the battery, thereafter, remove the air cleaner assembly and hot air hose. Subsequently, there are three bolts on the exhaust manifold heat shield and the heat shield should be detached after the bolts have been released. On carbureted engines, remove the EGA pipe clip in the upper part of the transmission and disconnect the EGA pipe connecting to the exhaust manifold. Pull the very thin oxygen sensor wire off at the connector, then undo the nuts and thereafter disengage the exhaust pipe from the manifold. To access the spark plug thread area, take off the spark plug wires from the exhaust side spark plugs and to remove the bolts and nuts that holds the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head and thus come off the head. As a preparation step before fitting the manifold remove all the residues of the gasket with a scraper and clean the flanges with lacquer thinner or acetone. Insert a new exhaust manifold gasket and put the manifold in place, then install the bolts and the nuts as tightly as you can by your fingers. Loosening of the mounting bolts and nuts should be done gradually in three or four steps till the specified torque is attained while tightening, the torque should be applied from the center towards the ends so as not to distort the manifold. Last to be put in are the other components with the process done in reverse to the removal procedure, start the engine and look for exhaust leak near the manifold where it connects to cylinder head and exhaust connecting the manifold to the exhaust pipe.
