2001 Honda Passport Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install an oil pump on 2.3L and 2.6L four cylinder engine on 2001 Honda Passport?
A: Before getting to the actual procedure of removing the oil pump, it is essential to turn off the vehicle, and the same should be done by removing the negative terminal of the battery. Using a screwdriver, undo the oil pump sprocket nut, in order for the sprocket to be locked during this process, then dismantle the pump to block bolts through the sprocket holes and remove the pump from the block cavity. In case of necessity, remove the nut and the sprocket from the shaft of the pump for inspection or, for example, during the overhaul. It is recommended that the number one piston be at TDC before installation of cylinder block onto the crankshaft. Pour clean engine oil on the outer rotor and fit it into the block cavity with the chamfered side turned outward. After cleaning the new O-ring with engine oil apply it on the groove in the oil pump cover and firmly press the new O-ring into the groove, install the outer rotor into the block cavity and position the inner rotor over the pump cover. Pour clean engine oil into the inner rotor, fit the pump cover and bring the inner rotor into meshing operation with the outer rotor which is situated within the engine block cavity. Turn the mounting bolts in a sequence gradually and in a ¼-turn basis until the required torque is attained to avoid distorting the cover and should be done in such a way that the pump shaft should turn without any hindrance. Fit the sprocket, apply 262 Loctite on the first shaft threads and fix the nut and tighten to the required torque. The assembly process should again be done in reverse to the removal process; the engine should then be switched on and oil pressure confirmed.
