If the engine is mounted on a portable engine stand, which is usually available quite cheap from equipment rental yard, then the above tasks will be quite easier when the engine is off; however, if no stand is available then the external components of the engine can also be removed by blocking the engine on the floor; then the extra of care should be taken to avoid tipping or dropping the engine. With a rebuilt engine, all external accessories are expunged from the engine for transfer to the replacement engine such as; clutch and fly wheel for manual transaxle engines, driveplate for models with automatic transaxle, the Ignition system accessories, emission controls, and engines mounting plus the mounting brackets, engine rear main seal retainer on V6 models, intake/ exhaust manifolds, fuel injection accessories, oil filter, ignition coil/ Because some of these parts can be unique to a specific application or installation, it is very important to take note of the position of gaskets, seals, spacers, pins brackets washers, bolts and any other small items which may be installed when replacing the same. Should the short block be obtained, the timing chain or belt, cylinder head(s), oil pan, oil pump pick-up tube, oil pump, and water pump should be removed so they can be turned in to the rebuilder as cores.
