Relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the fuel filler neck cap to relieve any pressure inside the fuel tank, then disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the carpeting from the floor of the trunk. Remove the fuel pump access cover screws and access cover, disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor, disconnect the quick-connect fitting for the fuel supply line, and on non-SULEV models, remove the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor locknut. On SULEV models, remove the six fuel pump retaining nuts. Carefully angle the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor out of the tank to protect the float arm and float from damage, inspect the seal for cracks, tears and deterioration, and if it's damaged, replace it. Install a new gasket in the hole before installing the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor in the fuel tank, and when installing the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor on a non-SULEV model, make sure that the index mark on top of the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor is pointing between the two marks on the edge of the hole. When installing the mounting flange on a SULEV model or on a V6 model, make sure that the three asymmetrically-located notches in the mounting flange are aligned with their corresponding lugs on top of the pump assembly. Before reconnecting the fuel supply line quick-connect fitting, be sure to replace the 0-ring inside the fitting, and when installing the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor on an SULEV model, be sure to tighten the retaining nuts to the torque. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.
