Honda Del Sol Heater Core

The Honda Del Sol Heater Core transmits engine warmth into the cabin, providing cabin occupants with reliable heat on frigid days. Placed in the dash, the Heater Core functions in the same way as a small radiator, with hot coolant flowing through finned aluminum or brass tubes while the blower circulates air across to heat and defog the cabin. Every Honda Del Sol uses this compact layout, and with air conditioning, the air is first cooled and then reheated by the Heater Core to dry it. Dash knobs rotate a valve or blend door. Some models include actuators and thermistors for closer control. The Heater Core also helps to shed excess engine heat during Honda driving. Leaks, clogs, or corrosion cut output, and the way to reach it usually involves pulling the Del Sol dashboard. Though there were some minor updates, Honda kept one basic style throughout Del Sol years, so differences are with the optional dual-zone controls and not the Heater Core itself.

  • Q: How to remove and install a heater core in the Honda Del Sol?
    A:
If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, have the system discharged by a dealer service department or automotive air conditioning repair facility. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disable the airbag, if equipped. Caution: If the radio in your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you have the correct activation code before disconnecting the battery. Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the heater valve cable. To disconnect the heater valve cable, pry open this clip with a small screwdriver and lift the cable end off the pin on the heater valve lever arm. Working in the engine compartment, disconnect the heater hoses where they enter the firewall. Place a drain pan underneath the hoses to catch any coolant that runs out when the hoses are disconnected. Remove the heater unit mounting nut located above the heater hose inlet and outlet tubes. Caution: Be careful not to damage or bend the fuel lines or brake pipes when removing the nut. Remove the heater/air conditioner control assembly. Remove the instrument cluster trim panel, the console and the instrument panel. On non-air conditioned models, remove the heater duct from between the heater unit and the blower unit. if equipped with air conditioning, remove the Evaporator unit. Remove the steering column bracket. Remove the wire harness clip from the heater unit, the two nuts retaining the heater unit to the bulkhead and remove the heater unit from the vehicle. Remove the screws from the heater core cover and the heater pipe clamp. Lift the heater core from the housing. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to check the operation of the air control flaps. If any parts bind, correct the problem before installation. Refill and bleed the cooling system, reconnect the battery and run the engine. Check for coolant leaks and proper heater system operation. If equipped with air conditioning, have the system charged by a dealer service department or automotive air conditioning repair facility.
