Honda Prelude Canister Purge Valve
The Honda Prelude Canister Purge Valve is applied to direct trapped fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the intake so they are burned by the engine instead of allowing hydrocarbons to be vented to the atmosphere. Mounted between the canister and manifold, the Canister Purge Valve is normally closed when the motor is off, but it opens when there is manifold vacuum, drawing fresh air through activated charcoal and mixing vapors into the cylinders. On earlier Honda coupes with carburetors, there was a simple vacuum-operated Canister Purge Valve that responded only to changes in pressure, but on later fuel-injected Prelude versions, the system was an electronic solenoid style, controlled by the engine control module that switches on or off as required for precise timing and also performs leak checks. Working with a vent solenoid and tank pressure sensor, the electronic unit allows the computer to close the system, draw a slight vacuum and check the pressure drop, and if necessary, set a code that warns the driver. This upgrade keeps the system tight to pass modern Honda emission tests and prevents deformation of the tank by balancing the pressure. A sticking Canister Purge Valve can lead to rough idle, fuel odors or a lit check engine lamp, indicating increased pollution and wasted fuel.
