If you hear a knocking or pinging sound while accelerating the engine, the octane fuel rating should be examined, and ignition systems settings and functions should be confirmed, finally the gap, range, and condition of spark plug should also be checked. If the starter motor cranks we must take a close look at the starter pinion and the engine ring gear and the mounting screws and the housing for cracks. Squealing sound is vivid by loose Accessory Drive belts, bent tensioners or a bad water pump. A growling noise often may be caused by a loose water pump or noisy tensioners. Some of the different tapping or ticking noises may be due to the low or dirty engine oil, damaged or collapsed lifters, low oil pressure, excessive,valves clearance, loose timing belt or chain or bent valves. There could be heavy knocking sound due to some problems such as; loose crankshaft pulley or bent connecting rods and or worn out rod bearings. One of the signs that may be observed while driving, which is associated with possible overfilling of the fuel tank-a fuel smell; a loose fuel filler cap, damaged fuel lines or increased fuel consumption due to failures of ignitions. Hydrocarbon smell may be defined by a rotten egg smell, which may signify a leaking intake gasket or an overcharging alternator, while a sweet odor may depict coolant leaking from a number of components or even run out of a head gasket. Loose mounts or covers can cause engine vibrations at idle while vibrations during acceleration may be as a result of loose exhaust system parts or lack of enough clearance in the directing of the exhaust systems.

The goal is to reduce the engine to its essential parts, including the cylinder head(s), valve train, engine block, crankshaft, pistons, and connecting rods, along with any in-block components like oil pumps and balance shafts.

It typically involves replacing the pistons, rings, bearings, timing belt or chain assembly, and oil pump. For OHV engines, it also requires a new camshaft and lifters.

Ordering parts correctly the first time avoids the need to disassemble the vehicle only to find out that the needed part is not in stock.

Check the pinion gear and ring gear.
