1996 Honda Passport Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on a 2.3L and 2.6L four-cylinder engine on a 1996 Honda Passport?
A: Unfasten the negative battery terminal from the battery in the hood, next unbolt the radiator and shroud. If equipped, unfasten the lower front cover or skidplate and as a next step, remove the drivebelts. For vehicles provided with manual transmission, engage the High gear and jam the parking brake in; for vehicles with automatic transmission, take out the starter and insert a large screw driver between the ring gears. Loosen and take out the pulley mounting bolt which is very tight by using a six-point socket and a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar should be used. To remove this pulley, you need to use a puller that will fit on the crankshaft and apply pressure on the hub to avoid scraping the sides of the pulley which will damage the vibration damper. Lose the timing belt and pull off the sprocket from the front of the crankshaft, which is easily done. Gently remove the oil seal from the seal housing using seal remover or flat head screw driver being very careful not to mar the crank shaft or the seal bore. Take the rubber seal out of the bore and then clean out the small hole in the cover or housing that the rubber piece fits into and put some engine oil or a multipurpose grease on the outer portion of the rubber seal. You can also insert a new seal into the groove with a little more space with help of a socket and then fine-tune it to the groove using a hammer, otherwise, a small section of a pipe of a gross diameter would do the job. After that look at the seal and see that the spring did not come out, then put the sprocket back in. Installation is the exact opposite of the removal, and one has to put multi-purpose grease or clean engine oil on the contact area of the seal on the pulley hub before placing the pulley over the Crankshaft. Double up the bolt to the required torque and start the vessel's engine to verify for leakage.
