1997 Honda Passport Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install a new rear crankshaft seal in the retainer plate on a 1997 Honda Passport?
A: It is assumed that the crankshaft has been installed and the final main bearing clearances checked, with the rear main seal retainer plate removed from the engine. Support the retainer plate over two equal-height blocks of wood and drive the old seal out using a punch and small hammer, ensuring the plate is well-supported. Lubricate the lip of the new seal with engine oil and install it in the retainer plate using a hammer and a large block of wood, driving it in squarely to the same depth as the old seal. Apply a thin bead of anaerobic sealant to the engine side of the retainer plate. Lubricate the seal area of the crankshaft with engine oil and carefully work the retainer and seal onto the crankshaft, using a blunt tool to keep the seal lip oriented toward the front of the engine. Once the retainer plate is fully seated and close to the block, start the retainer plate bolts finger-tight, ensuring the bottom surface of the plate is flush with the engine block, and then tighten the retainer bolts to the specified torque.
