1998 Honda Passport Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on a 2.2L four-cylinder engine on a 1998 Honda Passport?
A: Remove the negative battery terminal, then, evacuate the engine oil. The timing belt must be taken out, as well as the crankshaft timing belt sprocket. Very gently and carefully push out the old front oil seal from the crankshaft using a seal pulling tool or even a screwdriver and be very careful not to cut into the seal housing or the crankshaft while doing so, the other process is to drill few holes on the seal and then use a screw to pull the seal out by fixing a self tapping screw and then using a pair of pliers to pull the seal out. It is also necessary to clean the bore in the oil pump housing, and it is advisable to lubricate the outer rim of a new seal with the engine oil or multipurpose grease. Take a socket which has an outside diameter slightly less than the seal and with a hammer insert the new seal gently into the hole, or you can also use a short piece of some large diameter pipe in the absence of a suitable socket. After installation the seal must be inspected to verify that the spring didn't come out. Then fasten the crankshaft timing belt sprocket back into position, as well as the timing belt; add oil to the engine, join the negative terminal of the battery and start the engine to inspect for oil leaks.
