2001 Honda Passport Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Can a new rear crankshaft seal be installed without removing the seal retainer on a 3.2L V6 engine on a 2001 Honda Passport?
A: It is possible to replace the old seal with a new one by using a flat blade screwdriver to pry the seal retainer out and insert a new one while still in place, but this practice is discouraged because impact on the sides of the crankshaft or seal bore may damage the thread of the new seal lip as the seal is pulled out. If removing the oil pan and the retainer is not preferred, an alternative method can be used, but the recommended way to change the rear Crankshaft Seal involves several steps: first strip the transmission; secondly, eradicate the oil pan; thirdly, unbolt the rear Crankshaft Seal retainer and take off the retainer: note that it has dowels, which locate in the block; should be pulled straight off. Subsequently, put the retainer again in the bench vise and take out the older seal with the help of the flat screwdriver. To introduce the new seal, place the retainer onto a bare clean and flat surface, then use a block of wood and gently hit it with a hammer so as to push the seal in a square and straight manner until it penetrates as far as the former seal was fitted. Last of all, and on the mating surface of the retainer, spread a thin layer of ATV sealant and on the rest of the seal lip put a thin layer of clean oil on it and re-install the retainer, tightening the bolts of the retainer to the recommended torque, and the rest of the process is reversing the above process of removal.
