2001 Honda Passport Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a cylinder head on 3.1L V6 engine on 2001 Honda Passport?
A: Pull out the intake manifold and illuminate the area and then jack up the car and securely place it on stands. Engine block drain plugs are located on the back side of engine mounts; turn them with a wrench and allow the block to drip out. The exhaust pipe must be removed from the exhaust manifold. If you are carrying out work on the left cylinder head, then unscrew and remove the oil dipstick tube assembly; if you are working on the right one, then remove the drivebelt, the alternator, the air pump with the mounting bracket, as well as the lifting "eye" at the back of the head if it is to be replaced. Lift the vehicle off the jackstands, and lower it to the ground. If the head is to be replaced unfasten the exhaust manifold, the grounding strap at the rear of the head, and the sensor connector at front. Remove the power steering pump and bracket with bolt from the cylinder head, and unbolt the air-conditioner compressor bracket if existed. Turn the rocker arm nuts so that they can be undone in order to pull off the pushrods, then pull them off. Starting from a new head gasket, place it on a cardboard and mark the cylinder and the bolt pattern, also indicating the orientation in the terms of the front side of the engine and drill holes at the probable locations of bolts. Turn the ten cylinder head bolts in an anti-clockwise direction to a specified torque in a quarter turn pattern starting from the outer periphery and then going to the middle part of the cylinder head and store the bolts in the cardboard container. To complete the installation, gently raise the head off the engine in such a way it does not harm or scratch the mating surfaces. When performing this process, it is recommended one bolt the components from the old head on the new cylinder head. Safeguard the edges of the cylinder head and block as they will be mating surfaces-remove any leftover gasket with a gasket scraper and clean with lacquer thinner or acetone. In the floor shells, several areas of mating surfaces had undergone slight to excessive wear as manifested by nicks or scratches; for slight ones, use file; excessive may require machining. Utilize a tap to provoke the threads in the head bolt holes; and essential a die down the threads of every bolt to expel rust. Place the gasket over the engine block dowel pins with the mark THIS SIDE UP ON placed on it and place the cylinder head over the gasket. Apply a non-hardening sealant to the threads of CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS and fasten, following the sequence and to the torque listed. After that, fix the pushrods together with the rocker arms; for the remainder of the assembly, proceed in the opposite order of how they were removed. Prior to the installation of the valve covers, perform the valve lash adjustments, replace the coolant, and the engine oil together with the oil filter followed by starting the engine and the setting of the ignition timing.
