2002 Honda Passport Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a cylinder head on 2.2L four cylinder engine on 2002 Honda Passport?
A: To take out the cylinder head you first have to drain the cooling system and then take off the upper hose to the radiator. Then, remove the air intake duct as well as the alternator accompanied by brackets and the fuel rail together with the fuel pressure regulator and injectors. Go ahead and as a result, take off the intake manifold, timing belt, and camshaft sprockets as well as two idler pulleys and the left idler pulley bracket. Remove the camshaft position sensor and then, unbolt and take off the upper rear timing belt cover, then the exhaust manifold. Remove the crank shaft position sensor and knock sensor connectors, the valve cover, camshafts, and the valve lifters. Unplug the electrical connector and the hoses from the EVAP canister purge valve solenoid, also remove the ignition coil/module assembly. Remove the electrical connectors from the oil pressure switch, power steering pressure switch or any other switch or sensor that may be related, and place the harness to one side. By employing a new head gasket place the cardboard over the cylinder head, sketch its outline and bolt pattern, staple the corners of the cardboard on the cylinder head and make hole on the bolt locations, and then relax the cylinder head bolts in backward manner until they become loose enough, where you can remove them by hands. Stop lifting the head completely off the engine, do not pry and take out the cylinder head gasket. During installation, it is important that the surfaces to be joined tightly-that is the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block should be clean, with the usage of gasket scraper and solvent if necessary. It is crucial to look for any signs of wreck on the surfaces and remedy in case there is. Thread the new head bolts in the holes and run it down then remove the threads through chasing and the bolts cleaned. Place the gasket over the dowel pins in a proper manner and now place the cyliner head over this engine. Bolt in and torquetoen up the cylinder head mounting bolts using engine oil on the threads. Loosen the bolts in the preferred sequence than further to tighten up to the initial angle of torque then continue with the final angle of torque. Perform the process of reinstallation in the steps stated below: Add fluid in the radiator, change the engine oil and filter, start the engine and monitor whether there is a leakage, monitor the fluid level and wait till the engine is warm before checking the level of the coolant.
