2001 Honda Passport Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the camshaft on 3.2L V6 engine on 2001 Honda Passport?
A: For all 1997 models and many of the earlier SOHC models follow these steps, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and then the intake air plenum and the valvecovers. Subsequently, take off the timing belt, and using a strap-type wrench, hold the camshaft sprocket before pulling out the camshaft sprocket bolt, then pulling off the sprocket. First, undo the bolts securing the plate behind the camshaft sprocket, then the camshaft must be unbolted; it has five towers of the camshaft and bolts in place of these towers; having unbolted all these towers; the camshaft together with the towers must be lifted from the cylinder head. Check the camshaft bearing surfaces for wear and check /measure the camshaft journal oil clearance and replace if required. The damn shaft should be checked for lobe height and if wear is beyond limit, a new camshaft should be fitted. Replace the new camshaft seal, lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and lobes and then fix the camshaft correctly in the head with the camshaft towers in their initial positions. Torque the camshaft tower bolts in the pattern to the first torque, align the sprockets on the cams with those on the heads, and torque the camshaft sprocket bolt. The rest of the steps involve the reverse of the literature and the resources removed in the process. For 1998 and later DOHC models raise the car, turn the engine to TDC of number 1 piston, then remove the valve covers and timing belt, studying the position of the camshaft bearing caps. The bearing cap bolts should then be loosened and the caps removed so that the camshafts can be lifted out but should be done in a level manner. Prying the lifters out, and returned when not in use; if necessary the camshaft sprocket as well as the drive gear retainer shall be taken off. Wear check of lifters and cam lobes, camshaft journal diameter measurement and check of Plastigage oil clearance with renewal of camshaft bearings, if required. In case the drive gear retainer has been relinquished, it has to be placed back and the bolts fastened. Mate the camshaft and secured it to a padded vise, then align the camshaft driven gear and the sub-gear, finally use a bolt to fasten the two gears. Coat the lifters with engine assembly lube and fitted back into its original position with the valve adjustment shim intact. Oil the camshaft lobes and bearing journals and position the timing mark before setting the camshafts. Position the next bearing cap and tighten the bolts and the last bolt to the sub gear was loosened. If replacing the oil seal then do this as you would for a crankshaft oil seal. Place the timing belt sprocket and fasten the bolt, and should not be rotated; place the timing belt on the sprocket. For this one confirm the cam timing by removing the spark plugs then turning the engine over checking for resistance. Cylinder heads are put back in reverse sequence while and valve clearance adjustments should be made as well Test the engine for leaks and functionality.
