2002 Honda Passport Valve Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the left and right valve covers on 3.2L V6 engine on 2002 Honda Passport?
A: To release the left valve cover, unbend the negative cable of the battery and then lose the air intake duct, in addition to the EGR pipe for models that are 1997 and earlier. Next, remove the ignition coil packs from the spark plugs by removing the screws and nuts, labeling the motorcycle's ignition coil pack with masking tape so that there will be no switching of the packs when putting everything back. Remove electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor, remove the PCV valve and remove the ground cable bolt at the front of the grommet bracket on the valve cover. Remove the accelerator cable and then unscrew the throttle body from the top of the intake plenum. Take out all the bolts holding the valve cover and then unscrew the valve cover, use a piece of wood and a hammer to loosen it due to the tightness. Longer screws are used for the right valve cover, and for that you need to take off the intake plenum if your Biloxi is 1997 or earlier model or EGR pipe on the 1998 or later models. Remove the PCV hose, ground strap, and engine lifting bracket and may require a swapping of the heater hoses. Depress the tab located on the valve cover and soon it will pop right up, . The next step is to unscrew all the bolts of the valve cover and then take off the cover . For installation, see that the surfaces of each cylinder head and valve cover are free from gasket residues; the clearing can be afford by a gasket scraper as well as, lacquer thinner or acetone. Hand clean the threads on the mounting bolt and put a dab of RTV sealant on both the front and the rear camshaft towers and shim the gasket into place and make sure that it fits into the groove around the cover. Place the cover gently on the head, fit the bolts and tighten them in a turn or two, three or four to reach the standard torque. The rest of the procedures are in the reverse order of their removal, and being sure that the new oil pan gasket works properly, start the engine and examine for oil leakage while the engine is warming up.
