Q: How can external engine components be removed more easily when using a portable engine stand on 2008 Honda Fit?
A: It is much easier to have the exterior fittings out when the engine is on a portable engine stand, and these are often available quite cheaply for rent from equipment hire shops. In preparation to mounting, it is advisable to take off the flywheel/driveplate. If a stand isn't available then external parts of the engine can be removed when the engine is blocked up on the floor but more precautions must be taken so that it cannot be tipped or dropped. In many circumstances all external accessories have to be disconnected and moved to the rebuilt engine, such as the flywheel/driveplate, ignition coils and wiring harnesses, emission devices, the engine mount and mount bracket, intake/exhaust manifolds, fuel injection parts, oil filter and oil cooler, spark plugs, thermostat and housing, and water pump. Much care is needed when removing these parts as observing the position of gaskets, seals, spacers, pins, brackets, washers, bolts, and other small parts will be useful during assembly. Should a short block be procured, then necessary components include the timing chain, cylinder head, oil pan, oil pump pick up tube, oil pump and the water pump should be pulled off so that the old short block could be taken to the rebuilder as a core.
