Regularly changing your car's oil is the most effective way to maintain your engine's good health, because dirty and watered-down oil wears out the engine parts. Make sure you have everything you need before starting: a drain pan, rubber gloves, breakdown tools, a socket wrench, and a filter remover, together with cloths or newspaper for any oil spills. Getting under the car is easier whether you lift it on a hoist, drive it onto ramps, or help support it with jackstands. When changing the oil, find and remember the locations of both the drain plug and oil filter, knowing that engine and exhaust parts will be very hot. First, position the car on a flat ground. Start the engine till it warms up, and then stop the engine. Take off the valve cover filler cap. Lift the vehicle on jackstands and take off the center part of the splash shield that protects the underside. Set the drain pan beneath the drain plug, undo the plug very carefully, and then let the old oil drain as you check for metal shavings. When finished draining, wash and put back the drain plug, then tighten it. Find a place for your drain pan under the oil filter, break the filter loose with an oil filter wrench, and tip the free end upward to stop spills. Clear the filter mounting area clean, getting rid of all past gasket material. Attach the new filter to the engine after coating its rubber gasket with new clean oil, and be sure not to put too much force on the mounting. Unload everything from under your car, lower it back down, pour in fresh oil through the oil filler hole, and use a plastic funnel if needed. Pour three quarts of fresh oil, give it some time to settle, then check the dipstick to see how much oil is in the tank. Before starting the engine with new oil in, put the filler cap back in place when the dipstick reads close to the upper hole. Twist off the engine after one minute, then check for oil pan and filter leaks. Tightly seal them if you find any. Check the dipstick again after waiting a couple of minutes, and put in more oil if the level remains low. Keep watch over your car's oil for the first several outings after you change it. Throw away the old oil responsibly - follow up with local centers about their oil recycling services. To reset the oil life reading, turn the ignition to "ON" with the engine off, press and hold the select/reset knob until the engine oil reading appears, keep holding it for 10 seconds, rotate the knob to show "oil life" and, when the display flashes, push and release the knob again. Press the knob in two places to make sure the oil life counter goes back to "100" and fixes any maintenance item concerns.
