Honda Del Sol Fuel Pump

Honda Del Sol Fuel Pump pumps gas from the tank to the engine to provide for smooth driving. Early versions in carbureted Del Sol models relied on a mechanical Fuel Pump mounted outside the tank with a cam-driven diaphragm to push fuel (about 15 psi). Later fuel-injected Honda versions changed to what is basically an electric in-tank Fuel Pump that delivers 40 to 60 psi, remains cool when submerged, and reduces fire risk. This electric design allows the ECU to modulate the speed of the Fuel Pump, matching the demand, saving power, and turning off the flow in the event of collisions. A mechanical setup is fine for simple engines but cannot match the demands of modern engines in terms of pressure, so many Honda Del Sol cars have switched to the electric Fuel Pump to ensure reliable starts and cleaner emissions. Whether the pump is mechanical or electric, all Honda Del Sol Fuel Pumps keep the supply constant, and you never stall out when you are hitting the gas.

Honda Del Sol Fuel Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to detach the fuel pump from the fuel tank and reinstall it on Honda Del Sol?
    A:
Detach the cable from the negative battery terminal and relieve the fuel system pressure. Remove the rear seat and the bolts that retain the fuel pump access cover, then unplug the electrical connector from the fuel pump and detach the fuel lines. Remove the fuel pump assembly retaining nuts and lift the fuel pump from the tank, angling it slightly to avoid damaging the pump screen. Take off the electrical connector protective cover and disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump by lifting the tab on the main connector. Squeeze the hose clamps with pliers, removing the upper clamp from the hose and sliding the lower clamp halfway up the hose, off the fuel pump inlet. Separate the pump from the fuel pump bracket and pry off the retaining clip to detach the sock filter from the end of the pump. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring a new gasket is used on the cover plate flange.
