Early models of the Honda Pilot have a Flywheel made of steel with conventional bearings, so the maximum spin is only several thousand RPM, but the wheel itself has a good amount of mass for momentum. Later Honda revisions in the same Pilot line see the introduction of high energy density carbon fiber composite Flywheel units, and the Flywheel rides on magnetic bearings, which allows speeds near 60,000 RPM to be achieved, reducing weight while increasing the energy capacity. Despite a change of materials, each Flywheel behaves like a mechanical capacitor, absorbing excess energy and returning it during moments of demand, effectively filtering out rapid speed swings so that any Honda Pilot acceleration or cruising remains consistently controlled.

- Q: How to Remove and Inspect the Flywheel and Crankshaft in the Honda Pilot?A:Remove the engine and transaxle, then detach the transaxle from the engine. Take out the bolts securing the driveplate to the crankshaft. Clean the driveplate, inspect for cracks and check the ring-gear teeth. Lay the driveplate on a flat surface and check for warpage. Clean the driveplate and crankshaft mating surfaces. Replace a leaking crankshaft oil seal before reinstalling the driveplate. Position the driveplate against the crankshaft, noting the offset bolt holes. Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern in stages. Reverse the removal procedure to complete installation.
