For two point two L and two point three L engines, observe the radio's theft prevention number before removing the battery. Start with unscrewing the negative terminal of the battery and then get at the bolt of the crankshaft pulley through the left side of the inner fender liner. Turn the engine anti-clockwise till the white TDC mark sits right on the pointer provided on the engine casing. When it is possible, do not remove the ignition wires from the distributor cap, but label them if it proves necessary; remove the distributor cap and make sure that the ignition rotor is in the right place. In case the marks are disturbed, rotate the crankshaft one full cycle in order to bring the TDC mark into view. If the distributor has to be reinstalled make alignment marks on the distributor housing and clyinder head, then disconnect the electrical connectors and remove three mounting bolts to take out the distributor. To install, crank the shaft to TDC or camshaft's UP mark facing up if the valve cover has been replaced. New O-ring should be treated with clean engine oil before being fitted to distributor shaft and distributor to be fitted into the cylinder head such that the offset lug pins into the camshaft groove. Tighten the mounting bolts by hand, redo the connection of the electrical connectors and put back the wires of ignition in the right manner before joining thae negative terminal of the battery. To reset the PCM idle memory turn on the engine and bring the engine to a 3000 rpms for a while then wait until it reaches the level where the cooling fan starts and then let the engine to idle for about five minutes with no accessories. After all, examine and set the ignition timing, also input the radio security code. In this case we need to remove the distributor, to do that the negative battery cable must be disconnected, 3-prong connector has to be detached from the distributor, ignition wires have to be matched and removed then the screws holding distributor to the cylinder head have to be loosened and distributor pulled away from it. In assembly, turn piston in the no.1 cylinder to TDC, apply light oil on a new O-ring and fit the distributor in the correct position that the offset drive shaft of the distributor is correctly positioned. Retighten the mounting bolts, reconnect the 3 prong connector; install the ignition wires, tighten the mounting bolts firmly and connect the negative battery clip to set baseline ignition. For 3.0L engines, the process is similar: pull the negative battery terminal; loosen the connector from the distributor terminal; align the marks, and unbolt the ignition wires; align the distributor, and remove the mounting bolts. For installation one should turn the piston #1 to the TDC, lubricate a new O-ring, insert the distributor into the housing, tighten the mounting bolts by hand, connect wires to the connector and put them in the proper places.
