Honda Prelude Starter Solenoid is the small but decisive device that allows the engine of the coupe to spring to life by bridging the power of the battery to the starter motor the instant the key is turned. Sitting on the starter assembly, the Starter Solenoid receives a light current from the ignition switch, snaps heavy contacts shut and funnels a surge from the battery that spins the motor while pushing the pinion gear into the ring gear so the engine can crank. If the unit does fail, that high current path remains open, the motor never turns on, and the only sound the driver hears is clicks. Across the generations of the Honda Prelude, two styles of engagement have been associated with this action. Early Prelude models utilized the Bendix inertia drive, in which the pinion would utilize its own momentum to slide along a threaded shaft, and there was no Starter Solenoid link guiding the gear, so mis-meshing was known to be more prevalent. Newer Honda editions switched to the integrated Starter Solenoid drive that uses electromagnetic force to shove the pinion right into the ring gear, providing faster and cleaner engagement and the addition of a one-way clutch that prevents the running engine from turning the motor backward. - Q: How to Diagnose Issues if the Starter Solenoid Does Not Energize on a Honda Prelude?A:Before testing, assure the parking brake is set, the transaxle is in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual), and the battery is fully charged and in good condition. Connect a voltmeter from the (S) terminal on the solenoid to ground, then turn the ignition switch to the START position and test for battery voltage. If battery voltage is not found, inspect the ignition switch circuit; if found, proceed to the next test. Connect an ohmmeter between the battery negative post and the starter solenoid mounting plate (manual) or the ground terminal (automatic), then turn the ignition switch to the START position. The ohmmeter should read zero (0); if not, repair the faulty ground. If both tests are performed and the solenoid still does not energize, replace the solenoid.
