In cases where the engine has to be pulled out for overhaul or major repairs, the following preconditions are recommended. It is critically important to find a proper spot to work; there must be enough space to function, as well as store the car. If there is no proper shop or garage to be found, one must at least have a flat level clean working surface of concrete or an asphalt. Removing tools and prolonging the preparation of the engine and the engine compartment will prevent dirty tools from spreading through the car. A bare essential is an engine hoist or an A-frame and it must be capable of handling the weight of the engine and its accessories. Care is taken at this stage because there is a high risk involved when the engine is lifted out from the vehicle. If the engine is being removed by a beginner, it is recommendable to have an assistant from someone more experienced because the assistance in the process will help. Preparation before the operation takes place is highly recommended and this involves preparation of all equipment that may be required for a particular job. Tools that constitute indispensable when removing and installing the engine include the floor jack, wrenches and sockets, wooden bars and lots of rags and cleaning solution for wiping of mess. If the hoist has to be hired, and this should be done in advance, and as many operations as possible should be performed without this equipment. Finally, accept that the vehicle may come out of service for sometime since it may need a lot of work that can only be effectively done by a machine shop. Besides, talking to these shops before extracting the engine will facilitate determining the amount of time it takes in rebuilding or repairing the part. Heavy and careful attention must be observed while dismantling and fixing the engine since careless moments might cause severe harm. And as anybody who has done any major tasks, it can be done well if planned carefully and if one has the time and the patience to do it right.

Before beginning engine reassembly, ensure you have all necessary new parts, gaskets, and seals, along with common hand tools, a torque wrench (1/2-inch drive), a piston ring installation tool, a piston ring compressor, short lengths of rubber or plastic hose to fit over connecting rod bolts, Plastigage, feeler gauges, a fine-tooth file, new engine oil, engine assembly lube or moly-base grease, gasket sealant, and thread locking compound.

Remove the main bearing caps and separate the bearing inserts from the caps and engine block, tagging them to indicate their original positions.

Raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, drain the cooling system and engine oil, and remove the starter and splash shields.

A short block includes an engine block with a crankshaft and piston/connecting rod assemblies already installed, requiring minimal machine work for installation of existing components.

These measurements should be taken with the block not mounted on an engine stand to avoid distortion.

An overhaul involves restoring internal parts to the specifications of a new engine. This includes replacing piston rings, reconditioning cylinder walls, and replacing main, connecting rod, and camshaft bearings. It may also involve reground crankshafts and resized connecting rods, servicing valves, and rebuilding components like the starter and alternator.
