The engine number is the number on the right that is stamped directly onto the engine block. The VIN number plate on the left is riveted onto the transaxle assembly. The installed engine type is part of the Line, Body, and Engine type three character code found in serial number positions 4, 5 and 6. This three-character code represents the basic body (or platform) type,and engine type installed for each particular model year. Sometimes this code will remain the same from one year to another although the installed engine type could change. Although the code describes which engine type is installed as original equipment for a particular model year, this code is not a portion of the five character engine type and serial number stamped on the engine block. The engine type and serial number are found near the front of the vehicle, stamped on the engine block where the transaxle housing and engine block join one another. The engine type is a five-character code, which is followed by and separated from the engine serial number by a hyphen. This code is used the by the manufacturer to designate the engine type and the charts in this Total Car Care manual use the engine type to provide engine specifications which may vary from engine to engine. Locate the engine code stamped in the engine block and determine the engine type before attempting to service the vehicle. Write the engine code and the engine type along with the complete VIN number of the vehicle on the inside cover of this Total Car Care manual. Knowing the engine type and vehicle serial number will not only help with obtaining the correct service information, this information will assist the local parts vendors when shopping for replacement parts. Bring the manual along when shopping for parts. Having the manual handy can help to properly identify a needed part. If a part has to be ordered, it's far better to order it correctly the first time oravoid having a vehicle completely disassembled only to find out the part needed is not in stock. On rare occasions, a part may be back-ordered, meaning the part is temporarily unavailable.In a situation such as this, it may be wise to wait until the part is available before starting on the repair or maintenance about to be undertaken, if the vehicle can be operated in a safe and reliable manner.

Examine the starter pinion gear and engine ring gear for damage, and check the starter mounting bolts and housing for cracks.

It is rare to replace just the piston rings if other components are within factory specifications; usually, rings, bearings, and the oil pump should be replaced in a process known as a "freshen up".

As you strip the engine of unnecessary components, consider drawing pictures or labeling containers to mark the locations of various parts and fasteners, as modern engines have many brackets and clips that can easily be mixed up.

Use a 17mm wrench to remove the oil drain plug. Pull the plug away from the pan to drain the oil. When reinstalling the drain plug, use a new crush washer. Use a band type filter wrench to remove the oil filter. Wipe the mating surface of the engine block clean. Install the drain plug and wipe any oil drips off the oil pan.
