About Honda Axle Shaft

A Honda axle shaft assembly functions as a transferor of energy from the transmission to your wheels to assist in moving your vehicle along the roads you encounter. Some other common names for the axle shaft can be half-shaft, or a CV axle. Whatever you call it, the shaft has specially fit splines on each end which enables a secure connection between the wheels and the transmission assembly. Your average axle shaft is located towards the front of your Honda, exiting the inner hub of each front wheel.
One of the most common culprits which can take out your axle shaft will be a torn rubber axle boot. If this happens, the grease that was packed within it will start leaking out, increasing the heat and friction on the axle shaft assembly up to the point of a complete part breakdown. Other than the visible signs, you may experience some audible or physical indications like a clicking noise when trying to turn, or feeling very rough steering wheel vibrations when you are driving. So if you see the signs of eminent failure on your axle, be sure to replace it as soon as possible to avoid any further damage to other surrounding suspension and drivetrain parts.
If you need a great deal on factory-replacement Honda OEM parts, you have come to the right place. We, HondaPartsNow.com, only sell 100% genuine Honda parts and accessories. All parts here are guaranteed to be brand new and in a high specification. Surprisingly, we offer you high quality parts with huge discounts, and the price is up to 36% off MSRP. Do not worry, price is the only thing we would like to lower, but not the quality. Also, we offer you a convenient and fast shipping, making sure your part will be delivered in a good shape.

Honda Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Axle Shaft on Honda CRX?
    A:
The removal and installation of front components requires loosening of the front spindle nut which should be done with the vehicle on all the four wheels so that the vehicle does not fall off. Stabilize the vehicle, but do not jack up the front suspension system, then detach the front wheel and tire assemblies and the spindle nut. Remove the transaxle oil and replace the drain plug, then, to remove the damper fork, screw off the nut on the damper fork and loosen the pinch bolt. Subsequently, it is required to take out the cotter pin and the castle nut of the lower arm, and by using an appropriate puller, the lower arm of the knuckle. Take the knuckle and pull it outward and then using a plastic hammer remove the outboard axle shaft joint. Push with the pry bar on the inner CV-joint to push the set ring out of the groove then pull the in-board CV-joint to pull the axle shaft as well as the joint off the differential case. In terms of installation, follow the removal process but in reverse, bear in mind that new set rings need to be fitted in the ends of the axle shafts and make certain that set ring locks in the side gear of the differential. Just put the spindle nut in place without the torque, then put the suspension back in place, torque the upper damper pinch bolt to 32 lbs. ft. and the fork nut to 70 Nm. When putting the lower ball joint stud through the new axle, tighten the ball joint nut to 40 ft. lbs. and used to snug up and turn to loosen and retighten as may be required to secure a new cotter pin. Last, with the automobile on all four wheels, using newly purchased spindle nut torque to 134 foot pounds. and than put the correct fluid into the transaxle. With the 1988-91 4WD wagon the first thing you have to do is pry the spindle nut stake and then turn the nut and the wheel nuts. Stabilise the vehicle and deflate the tyre then both the tyre and the wheel, pull the brake hose from the brake pipe. Utilize the floor jack to lift the rear suspension in such manner that most of the weight will be off the lower arm, withdrawal the trailing arm bushing bolts and detach the upper and lower arms from the trailing arm. Turning the trailing arm anti-clockwise pull it outward and taking the outboard joint of the rear axle shaft with correct tool. Pushing on the axle shaft assembly with the pry bar will move the set ring beyond the groove and the inboard joint has to be pulled to remove the axle shaft with CV-joint from the differential case as a combination. For installation, the new set ring must be on the axle end side and it must engage the side gear groove. Reassemble the suspension as follows Tighten the upper and lower arm bushing bolts to 40 ft. lbs. and the trailing arm bushing bolts to 47 ft. lbs. When the vehicle is on all four wheels, torque the spindle nut to 134 fn. lbs.
  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Front Axle Shaft on a Honda Odyssey?
    A:
Set the parking brake and remove the wheel cover or hubcap. If the axle shaft/hub nut is staked, unstake it with a center punch or chisel. Loosen the axle shaft/hub nut with a large socket and breaker bar, but do not remove it yet. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheel. If removing the left axle shaft, drain the transaxle lubricant. Remove the axle shaft/hub nut, disconnect the upper end of the stabilizer bar link, and separate the control arm from the steering knuckle. To loosen the axle shaft from the hub splines, tap the end of the axle shaft with a hammer and brass punch; if it is stuck, a puller may be necessary. Pull out on the steering knuckle and detach the axle shaft from the hub, suspending the outer end on a bungee cord or wire. Before removing the axle shaft, check for lubricant leakage around the differential seal, as a leak may require seal replacement after removal. For the right axle shaft, tap the inboard joint off the intermediate shaft using a long drift; for the left axle shaft, position a prybar against the inner joint and carefully pry it off the transaxle side gear. Avoid using the axle shaft to pull on the inner joint to prevent damage. Remove the axle shaft assembly, ensuring not to over-extend the inner joint or damage the axle shaft boots. If necessary to move the vehicle while the axle shaft is out, place a large bolt with two large washers through the hub and tighten the nut securely. Installation is the reverse of removal, with additional points including removing the old set-ring from the inner CV joint or intermediate shaft and installing a new one, applying a film of multi-purpose grease around the splines of the joints, and ensuring the axle shaft is seated properly in the transaxle side gear or center support bearing. Clean all foreign matter from the axle shaft outer CV joint threads, install the new axle shaft/hub nut, and tighten it securely without reaching the specified torque at this time. Tighten the suspension fasteners to the specified torque, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and then tighten the axle shaft/hub nut to the specified torque, staking it to the groove in the axle shaft. Finally, tighten the wheel lug nuts to the specified torque and add transaxle lubricant if it was drained or spilled.
  • Q: What actions should you take if the front or rear axle shaft of an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle makes a clicking noise on a Honda Prelude?
    A:
In all-wheel and four-wheel drive automobiles, if the front or the rear outcome produces a clicking sound, then the chance of pebbles, nails, glass, and the like are trapped in the tire or the tread and should be removed, although small stones hardly puncture the tire, the other should be tackled expertly. Furthermore, you have to check the Constant Velocity (CV) joint for looseness, defects, or deterioration and replace if there is any sign of it. If the front or rear wheel vibrates, increases its speed, then the rim may be bent and requires replacement, the same refers to the tires which may have an internal problem or be out of balance, the wheel bearing and CV joint can also be checked and change if found to be loose or damaged. As for the front-wheel vehicles if the front wheel emits a clicking sound, then you should proceed with the debris removal as well as the visual inspection of the CV joint. If the rear wheel has a clicking sound, one should also look for some foreign object and if it is the case, it should be removed gently. In if the front or rear wheel in a rear wheel drive vehicle is making the clicking noise repeat the debris check and removal process. If the rear wheel shudders or vibrates, examine the rear wheel or axle assembly for bends and replace any of the defective parts, and examine the rear wheel bearing for looseness or damage and replace it, if necessary.
