Several precaution measures should be taken when an engine has to be removed for overhaul or major repair work and these are, goed through all the removal and installation procedures very carefully. It is almost critically important where to place the vehicle and the equipment; if a proper shop or garage is not available, then the work has to be conducted on a flat, even, clean and preferably concrete or asphalt surface. To gain efficiency in the tools used when starting the removal, the engine compartment and the engine need to be cleaned before the process start involve wrapping water-vulnerable components tightly and using spray cleaner especially in greasy areas and rinse and dry important components. An engine hoist, which is capable of lifting over the combined weight of the engine and transaxle should be used since it is rather dangerous to do so. Another for those models where subframe has to be removed to facilitate lowering of the engine/transaxle assembly from the compartment is a vehicle hoist. If inexperienced it would be wise to have at least one assistant as it is difficult to manoeuvre a heavy engine and transaxle assembly alone. Some of the things that should be prepared well in advance include; A heavy-duty floor jack, wrenches and sockets set, wooden blocks, cleaning tools among others. Also, expect the vehicle to be out of use for quite a sometime and talk to the machine shop to estimate as to how long it would take to rebuilt or repair.
