Before you take the
Valve Covers,
Timing Belt and sprockets, it is advisable to remove the
Rocker Arms and the shafts as a unit to inspect the camera shaft end play if any before pulling out the camera shaft. One needs to get at the rear plate for the camshaft, and this can be done by taking off the EGA valve, the bolts that are situated at the rear end of the plate followed by removing the camshaft retainer plate. This camshaft must then be withdrawn with equal and equal caution as applied during installation to ensure that the lobes and or journals are not marred in any way. Locate the position of the parts when unbolting the rocker arms and the springs from the rocker shafts, thereafter fixing the bare rocker shafts to the
Cylinder Head and fasten them tightly. Camshaft end play-use a dial indicator, pry the camshaft forwards and back, record the movement and compare it to the specifications; if there is an excessive movement, the camshaft must be replaced. Having verified the endplay, it is necessary to pull out the camshaft and measure the journal diameters and lobe heights, paying attention to the presence of traces of wear or damage. To get to the camshaft seals, one has to take out the timing belt rear covers-it is necessary to replace the oil seal every time the camshaft is going to be replaced. Coat the new seal with grease and fit it properly to standards; this means that the seal should be pressed in as far as the former seal. Remove the camshaft and then clean it thoroughly; also, apply grease on the journals and the lobes part before reinstalling it inside the cylinder head. Place an overhaul O-ring at the end of the camshaft retainer plate before clamping the retainer plates. Do the same for the other camshaft and then restore all elements of the engine in the reverse order than it was dismantled. Lastly, engage the engine to examine for oil leakages at the camshaft seals, start the automobile and revolve it for five minutes at minimal speed to discharge air from the lost motion assemblies, though tappet clamour at initiation of the assembly may be observed and should raise concern if it is persistent.
