Honda Ridgeline Accelerator Cable

The Honda Ridgeline Accelerator Cable connects the driver's right foot to the engine throttle, converting pedal movement into precise engine controls for airflow and fuel mixture to power all drives. In early Ridgeline years with the cable-operated throttles, the steel strand Accelerator Cable ran from the cabin pedal through the firewall to a lever on the throttle plate of the intake, so pressing the pedal rotated the throttle plate, increased venturi flow, and the carburetor/injector system automatically added extra fuel for quicker acceleration. This mechanical link was an example of Honda's commitment to intuitive control, but later Ridgeline models switched to electronic throttle control where a position sensor takes the place of the mechanical line. Although many enthusiasts appreciate the original layout, the Accelerator Cable, for its direct, linear feel and ease of troubleshooting, despite the change in technology, both styles have a common objective to control the pressure differential inside the venturi which draws the fresh air charge and triggers fuel delivery, whether from a float bowl carburetor on vintage engines or computer-controlled injectors on newer powerplants. Keeping a Honda performing at its prime requires a healthy Accelerator Cable, whose braided wire inside a lubricated sheath, return springs at the throttle body, and adjustable end fittings keep pedal travel consistent, and a worn Accelerator Cable can stick or fray, dulling response and preventing a Honda Ridgeline from reacting instantly whenever the pedal is pushed.

Honda Ridgeline Accelerator Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install accelerator cables in Honda Ridgeline?
    A:
On all 2005 and later Honda vehicles and 2003 through 2006 Acura models, the Throttle Body works through an electric servo motor driven by the engine control computer, replacing the standard cable connection. With these cars, a cable runs from the gas pedal to an APP sensor on the firewall. This sensor sends an electrical voltage reading to the PCM to show how much you press the pedal. Unplug the battery, take off the bolts that hold the sensor cover, and lift it off. With the throttle cam turned counterclockwise to its widest opening, take the cable off the cam, unscrew the locknut from the cable end, and pull the cable out of its bracket. Find the cable connection on top of the pedal, push the pedal all the way forward to pull the cable loose from its attachment point on the pedal arm. Locate the wire planned for the firewall, turn the mounting bracket face downwards, and remove the cable systems into the passenger space using your hand. Reinstall by reversing your steps, and make sure to check and adjust the accelerator cable when fixing the cover back into place. Push down on the accelerator cable till the throttle cam is closed, note the cable swing. Turn your adjustment nut until the deflection error changes. When you finish, ask another person to push the accelerator stick all the way down to ensure everything opens fully, then checks that everything returns to the standard neutral setting when the accelerator gets released.
